Dog's Epic 150-Mile Alaskan Ice Journey Should Be a Movie

His adventure across the Bering sea is just incredible.

Last month, a family from Gambell, Alaska ventured to Savoonga, another community on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Strait. During their visit, they unfortunately experienced the heartbreak of their Australian Shepherd, Nanuq, disappearing along with their other dog, Starlight.

Starlight turned up a few weeks later, but Nanuq, which means polar bear in Siberian Yupik, was nowhere to be found. A month after he disappeared, Nanuq showed up in Wales, 150 miles away. Watch the following to see the amazing reunion.

Nanuq's owner was quoted in The Guardian as saying, "I have no idea why he ended up in Wales. Maybe the ice shifted while he was hunting,” Iworrigan said. “I’m pretty sure he ate leftovers of seal or caught a seal. Probably birds, too. He eats our Native foods. He’s smart.”

Except for a swollen leg, with large bite marks from an unidentified animal, Nanuq was in pretty good health. They think the bite could have been from a seal or a polar bear. We are sure this is one time where the family wishes he would have had a camera attached to his collar.

The resourcefulness of Nanuq and his epic adventure have left Facebook users amazed. @Robert comments, "Surprised it found enough calories to stay warm." @Steve adds, "WOW this mutt has some stories to share!"

Does this sound like the beginning of a Jack London adventure book to anyone else, or is it just us? Regardless, we're thrilled that Nanuq has returned home safe and sound. It's a tale so incredible that we can't help but imagine it on the big screen someday. We'll be first in line for tickets!
