This Doghouse Could Sell for Up to $300K at Auction—Here's Why
While being in the doghouse is typically a bad thing, one auction at Christie's is proving that might not be the case after all. Currently up for grabs is a little abode crudely fashioned out of wood and sheet metal. Made for pups, it might not look like much—but it's expected to sell for up to $300,000.
Why on Earth would a no-frills doghouse go for so much? It has to do with a bizarre moment that happened in the Costa Rican rainforest on April 23rd, 2019, when a meteor came barreling down from space. A piece of it punctured a seven-inch hole into the roof of the small dwelling, narrowly missing Roky, the German Shepherd who lived there. Needless to say, the freak incident caused the modest dwelling's value to skyrocket—to the point that it's now valued more than the cosmic rock that struck it. (The meteorite, which is also on offer, is only expected to bring in between $40,000 and $60,000.)
“This is a really exciting auction and opportunity for collectors," said James Hyslop, the Head of Science and Natural History at Christie’s, in a statement. "Meteorites are incredibly rare objects—the combined weight of all the known meteorites is less than the annual output of gold." He added that "ever since an exhibition in Paris featured a car famously struck by a meteorite, I’ve wanted to bring an object hit by an extraterrestrial object to auction. There are not many, and I’m thrilled to be able to now offer Roky’s celebrated meteorite-impacted doghouse and its accompanying impactor.”
