Dog in the UK Became Addicted to Alcohol After Owner Left Out Drinks

Here's a reminder to keep your wine glass out of reach!

In an unbelievable tale of indulgence gone wrong, a dog in the UK developed a taste for the good stuff after repeatedly helping himself to alcoholic beverages left out by his owner. Yes, you read that right – this pup became addicted to alcohol, and after his owner passed, the Woodside Animal Welfare Trust in the UK had to treat the poor dog Coco for alcohol addiction.

This is the first time we have ever heard of this!

The Facebook post reads in part: Coco continued to be seriously unwell and required round the clock care. It became clear that he was suffering from symptoms that all pointed to alcohol withdrawal. He spent four weeks sedated to help with his withdrawal symptoms and to reduce the risk of further fits.

This is such a sad story, especially considering the other dog that was surrendered didn't survive. @Michelepearce comments, "This is heartbreaking to read. Thank you team Woodside Animal Welfare Trust for always helping all the animals, your patience and care is exemplary. So sorry Coco's friend didn't make it, I'm sure that hit you all very hard. Thankfully Coco is in safe hands now with the best love and care." @Sarah replies, "Utterly speechless. But thank goodness he’s in good hands now and a lovely home in the future." @Carolmay adds, "I can’t believe what I have just read. So happy that he has you guys to help him and blessings for his companion who sadly didn’t make through. Beautiful dog and I’m sure he will find a loving home."

The American Kennel Club says, Canines respond to the effects of alcohol much like humans, and the impact is often mild. You should, however, contact your vet, emergency clinic, or pet poison hotline if you have any concerns, to establish if treatment is needed.

We are so happy sweet Coco received help and we hope this precious pup gets a forever home soon. An alcohol-free forever home.
