Dog Trainer Shares Best Ways to Get a Pup Exercise During the Summer

It can be a challenge to keep furry friends both exercised and cool when the weather gets warm, but it's possible to find that happy medium. Staying in your dog's ideal routine is even more difficult on those sweltering days when you don't feel like doing much. Is a short walk enough?

Dog trainer Antonio Diaz, who goes by @leaderofthepacklv on Instagram, recently spoke with MORE FOX5 about the best way to make sure dogs get plenty of exercise this summer--even when you don't feel like going for a walk.

Did you have any clue that going for a walk isn't enough exercise to keep most dogs happy, healthy, and occupied? While it makes sense that different dog breeds will have different needs, it might be a surprise to learn just how much exercise dogs need on a daily basis.

Even small dogs like French Bulldogs need a full hour of exercise every day, and that could make for a very long walk if that's the only exercise they're getting. Luckily, Antonio suggests getting creative with the countless different ways to get your pup moving.

Hiding treats in a snuffle mat will get some dogs engaged, while others may enjoy a Kong toy. Better yet, playing with you will be a great form of exercise and a great form of bonding!

When the weather gets warm, though, some pet owners may not be as eager to go for a walk. That's where the dog park comes in handy, right?

From this dog trainer's experience, dog parks usually aren't the best place to go. Not only do you have no control over who your dog plays with and what behaviors they pick up, but you also put them at risk for a number of preventable illnesses. Instead, try meeting up with a few canine friends you already know! This way, your pup will be physically and mentally stimulated by playing with friends, and you won't get sweaty walking around the neighborhood.
