Dog Trainer Explains How to Train Pups to Leave Others Alone During Walks

Dogs love taking walks, but there are a lot of distractions along the way that might cause them to ignore commands or try to pull away on the leash. Bronagh Daly is the owner of Five by Five K9 out of Connecticut, and she's also a certified dog trainer. She shared a video on Wednesday, February 7th about how to get your dog to leave other dogs alone during walks.

In the video she's walking a cute little guy named Grady, who loves seeing and interacting with other dogs when he goes on walks. Bronagh uses a "1-2-3 pattern" to help redirect him and get him to walk without trying to engage with other dogs. Watch as she works her magic!

Seems easy enough, doesn't it! @Bronagh said that she taught him the pattern about 10 minutes before she shot the video, and it's clear that Grady gets it. Now we when he hears three, he will look back to his mom or dad and disengage his interest in the other dog. Pretty cool! Commenters appreciated the tip, too. @imgonnamerl asked, "Is this a training tip that can eventually be phased out i.e.- the dog isn’t reactive or overly interested anymore?" and @Bronagh responded, "Yes, it is! Helps the other dog become less & less important." Another commenter wondered if this would work for other distractions as well, and Bronagh shared, "The pattern game can help no matter which way they’re reacting too!"
