A heartbroken dog owner is sharing a powerful warning after her pet died in a tragic accident.

"One week ago I kissed my baby boy goodbye on my way out for work. But I had no idea it would be for the last time," Christina Young wrote in a devastating Facebook post about her dog, Petey. "I feel we have an obligation to share what happened to Petey to hopefully prevent it from happening to any of your babies."

Last month, Young's partner came from work and was surprised when their dog didn't greet him at the door, as usual. He soon realized what had happened when he found Petey laying lifeless on the floor, with an empty snack bag over his head. The couple believes that Petey got the bag off the counter, devoured its contents, and ultimately suffocated as he inhaled with his head inside the bag, unable to get it off.

Unfortunately, this scenario is not uncommon. There is even a Facebook page with thousands of members called Prevent Pet Suffocation. It is entirely dedicated to raising awareness about the risks pets face from chip bags and other food packaging.

To avoid something like this happening to your dog, be sure to store all snack bags safely out of reach from pets. It is also helpful to tear or cut up bags after they're finished, serve snacks in glass bowls or containers, and keep all trash can lids tightly closed. You can read a full list of safety tips here.
