A wounded K-9 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, got a little help from a canine friend. A yellow Labrador Retriever named Dwyer donated blood to the K-9, who was shot while on duty over the weekend.

K-9 shot in the line of duty needs blood transfusion

According to WISN, on Saturday morning, a Fond du Lac Sherriff’s deputy was involved in a shooting incident on Drury Place. The shooter died at the scene.

A K-9, who was also on-site during the ordeal, also suffered gunshot wounds. (Authorities are not releasing names of the shooter, deputy, or K-9, as an active investigation is underway.) Authorities rushed the K-9 to a local veterinary hospital. There, staff treated the pup for serious injuries and determined that he needed blood. A technician volunteered her dog, Dwyer, to donate blood, as Dwyer and the K-9 have the same blood type. The transfusion was successful and allowed the K-9 to undergo surgery.

In a Facebook post, Sheriff Ryan F. Waldschmidt shared a picture of the police dog chewing a tennis ball, his favorite toy, prior to surgery. The K-9 came through surgery. He is in “serious but stable” condition.

“He is by no means out of the woods,” the sheriff wrote, “but he’s a young, healthy, strong dog.”

The community has come out in support of the K-9, offering donations to pay for the pup’s veterinary care.

“THANK YOU to everyone who has reached out to show support for our K9 and our deputies,” Sheriff Waldschmidt wrote on Facebook. “The support has been overwhelming and is truly appreciated.”

If you would like to donate to the K-9 program, which relies 100% on donations, you can write a check to “FDL Sheriff K9 Program” and mail it to: FDL Sheriff K9 Program, PO Box 1273, Fond du Lac, WI 54936-1273. If you prefer to donate with a credit card or check, you can do so in person at 180 South Macy Street. The lobby window is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The K-9 program also takes donations over the phone by calling 920-929-3372.
