Dog Abandoned with Teary Eyes and a Note Saying She's a 'Good Puppy' Finds a Home

The 5-month-old pup was left tied to a pole outside of the Pennsylvania SPCA's Philadelphia headquarters

A 5-month-old dog was abandoned outside a Pennsylvania animal shelter with nothing but a note declaring her a "good puppy." Days later, she found her forever home!

The "sweet little pup," who was nameless when she arrived, was left tied up to a pole outside of the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' Philadelphia headquarters sometime between the evening of May 7 and the morning of May 8, the organization shared.

The complete note left with the pup reads: "Cane Corso – pit mastiff. Born 12-15-23. Good Puppy. House Broken. Don't Have A Name."

In a May 10 Facebook post, the Pennsylvania SPCA said the dog "had discharge from her eyes that made her look as if she had been crying."

"We literally had to wipe away the tears from her eyes," the organization said in a different post. "Our hearts broke for her. She was so terrified."

Outside of her teary eyes, the puppy was relatively healthy. Still, her demeanor was "a little bit more heartbreaking," said Gillian Kocher, the director of public relations & marketing for the Pennsylvania SPCA.

"She was nervous, had withdrawn body language, and a tucked tail," Kocher tells PEOPLE. "She wouldn't walk when leaving her kennel and had to be picked up."

"Though shy, she would wag her tail and approach slowly, looking for love," she adds of the pup.

The sweet canine, now named Minerva, was put up for adoption on May 10. "We are here to usher Minerva into the next stage of her life," the organization said at the time. "The era where she will find her forever family and be loved for the rest of her days."

Kocher reveals to PEOPLE that Minerva found a forever home a few days later, adding, "We just love Minerva and are so glad she's getting the attention she deserves."

Unfortunately, Minerva is just one of several dogs left at the Pennsylvania SPCA in a similar state over the past year.

"At just five months old, this sweet girl has been abandoned by likely the only family she has known," the organization said on Facebook. "And sadly, this is not a unique situation."

"We are seeing the frequency of dogs abandoned on our property rise. We are witnessing owner surrenders increasing," the organization wrote, noting that adoptions have "slowed down significantly."

"We are rescuing animals from cruelty and neglect. We are saving them after they've been abandoned," the Pennsylvania SPCA wrote, adding that the organization hopes to see more stories with an ending like Minerva's.

As Kocher puts it, "Shelters across the country are full and struggling to place animals. If anyone is considering adopting, now is the time!"
