What does the trending hair theory mean?: ‘My sim looking at me while I choose a hairstyle’

TikTokers are changing their hair to test a new theory, trying to change perception with each new style.

The #hairtheory currently has over 70 million views on TikTok, as people post videos with several different hairstyles. According to the theory, how a person wears their hair affects how they are perceived. Essentially, a different hairstyle makes you a different person.

“The hair theory is so true,” said @sikelchr.

People have also compared the videos in the trend to playing Sims, as most of the participants stand in the same spot while their hair changes — similar to the video game.

“My sim looking at me while i choose a hairstyle,” said @beverly.ellen.

Although hair theory is becoming a massive trend, it still doesn’t have a concrete definition. Nevertheless, Amy Shidd (@burcibaci) broke down the hair theory in a recent video.

“It’s important to remember that this is not actually a real scientific theory. For now, it is a TikTok trend and buzz term,” she said. “However, there is a recognized psychological phenomenon which changes the way that people behave and treat you based on what you wear.”

She cited a study by Hago Adam and Adam D. Galinsky called “Enclothed Cognition.”

TikTokers may not have scientific proof behind the hair theory, but many are still believers.

“It’s so true though bc I have short hair and when I put my extensions in for a night out I’m treated sooooo differently,” said @_jaimenotjamie_.

At the bare minimum, people feel different depending on their hairstyle. While it has the potential to be a self-fulfilling prophecy, testing out the hair theory could get people to treat you differently.
