Does Popeyes’ fish sandwich even compare to the iconic chicken sandwich? We tested it out

In mid-February, Popeyes rolled out a fried fish sandwich that could easily give the brand’s chicken sandwich a run for its money.

Using the same toasted brioche bun, sauce and pickles (you know how I feel about pickles) as the chicken sandwich, the Cajun Flounder Sandwich is essentially a grown-up version of a McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish. And I’m calling it now: The Cajun Flounder is so good, it could potentially start the Fish Sandwich Wars.

As a fan of Popeyes’ chicken sandwich, I thought it was pretty brave of the company to come out with a fish sandwich almost two years after the chain sparked a total freakout over fried chicken. There’s not much difference between the two sandwiches — besides the obvious — which may be why the restaurant was so confident to launch its new item.

“Caught in the icy waters of the Pacific, Popeyes flounder is light and flakey and seasoned in a blend of the Louisiana-rooted brand’s Cajun mild and spicy seasoning,” Popeyes said in a statement. “With only four simple ingredients combined to perfection, the fried filet is served atop the same buttery toasted brioche bun with barrel cured pickles that fans know and love from the Chicken Sandwich, along with Popeyes legacy tartar sauce.”

From the first bite, I was in love with this sandwich. The Cajun Flounder is the Meg Ryan to my Billy Crystal — suddenly I understood love songs and had an urge to submit a food review to the New York Times’ Modern Love column.

The Cajun seasoning is only slightly spicy, and it’s really what sets the sandwich apart from other fried fish sandwiches I have (reluctantly) eaten. It wasn’t soft or soggy — which I was concerned about — and overall, I couldn’t wait to stop recording my first impression so I could just eat the. whole thing.

Other fast-food places need to take note. Filet-O-Fish simply isn’t going to cut it anymore.
