Ever had a moment when your BFF texted you an acronym or phrase and you had absolutely zero idea what the heck they were talking about? No shame; we've all frantically run to Google to quickly look up what the latest texting term means. If you clicked on this article, odds are someone said, "So-and-so are my OTP," and you're just staring at your phone (or even in person) like, "Uh, excuse me?"

No worries, we've got you. "OTP" is a slang term that stands for "one true pairing" or "one true pair," according to dictionary queen, Merriam-Webster.

If you're still like, "Mkay, WTF does that mean?" here are some examples:

  • Mike and Eleven from Stranger Things

  • Laura Jean and Peter from To All the Boys I've Loved Before

  • Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott

Basically, a couple (real or fictional) can be your OTP. If the couple you're thinking of isn't canon — aka isn't actually seen in the source material — such as shipping Lucas and Dustin on Stranger Things, Lucas and Dustin can still be your one true pairing.

While Merriam-Webster claims OTP is used for fictional movie/TV couples who aren't canon, plenty of OTP lists online disagree, including the likes of Ross and Rachel from Friends and Nico Minoru and Karolina Dean from Runaways in their list of OTP faves.

Many OTPs can be seen by fans as toxic pairings, such as Aria and Ezra from Pretty Little Liars, since he was, you know, her teacher. Another popular noncanonical ship is Sam and Dean from Supernatural, who are literally brothers.

Moreover, we realize Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott are, as of this writing, not dating anymore, but they can still be your OTP, despite their actual relationship status. The best part of internet slang is there aren't rules like how your teacher wants your essay written in APA or MLA format.

If you ship two characters (or celebs) together, and you feel like they are your ride-or-die couple, then, congrats; you've found your OTP.
