The Exorcist: Believer is here to relaunch a franchise and deliver some old-fashioned fire-and-brimstone scares in the process. This time around, it's young best friends Angela and Katherine who fall foul of a demon, going missing and then reappearing three days later seemingly changed.

Just as he did with the recent trilogy of Halloween movies, director David Gordon Green jettisons the lore of the existing Exorcist sequels, prequels and spinoffs, opting instead to make Believer a direct continuation of the original Exorcist movie. And in order to make that connection clear—and possibly foster some much-needed goodwill among horror fans—he has brought back Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil, whom we first met all those years ago as the terrified mother of possessed teenager Regan.

A lot appears to have changed for Chris since we last saw her in 1973. Once a staunch atheist, she now encourages Leslie Odom Jr.'s Victor to "have faith" if he hopes to ever get Angela back. And, somewhat tragically given everything Chris went through to save her daughter, she and Regan are now estranged.

Wiping the slate clean might frustrate some longtime fans, but it also allows room for new characters to take up more narrative space in the movie, including Ann Dowd (Hereditary) as a nun-turned-nurse who aids in the girls' exorcism.

Believer is the first movie in a new planned trilogy of movies which will explore the horrors of demonic possession, so while this film seeems to resolve its story, the door to hell is definitely still ajar.

Does The Exorcist: Believer have a post-credits scene?

Unlike most other franchise movies, Believer does not tease a sequel or offer up one last scare in the form of a post-credits scene. Once the lights in the theater come back on, it's safe to loosen your tense grip on the armrest and leave your seat.
