How Does Dyson's $579 Stick Broom Stack Up To Shark's $299 Vertex Lightweight Cordless Vacuum?

Confession: I have an inordinate fondness for vacuum cleaners. Maybe it's the way they suck up all the allergens, or perhaps it's the illusion of control in knowing that with the press of a button all those dust bunnies disappear. All I know is that of all household chores, I actually find it a zen experience to vacuum. Whatever the reason, I tend to be a bit excited whenever I get to test out a new unit.

This brings me to comparing the Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute Lightweight Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner with Shark Vertex Lightweight Cordless Stick Vacuum with DuoClean PowerFins. Both are the housecleaning equivalent of a sharp sportscar. Neither is cheap, but is the Dyson stick vacuum really worth over $300 more than the latest and greatest by Shark? Both do an amazing job on deep cleaning but read on for our top pick.

The benefits:

  • Bragging rights. Dyson products have a bit of extra cachet for a reason. The name brand really is synonymous with superior products that last.

  • 60-minute run time with a single charge. If you tend to get frustrated when your vacuum dies mid-cleaning, you can relax knowing this will keep up until all the cat hair is sucked up.

  • A wider load. Personally, I love the fact that there's a wider cleaning path on this model, 9.84 inches to be exact. You can get to more dirt with fewer back and forth.

The details: Someone recently asks me if I thought Dyson products were the splurge. In a word, yes! This light machine is said to capture even tiny particles like allergens and bacteria. It's also really light, so you won't find your hand going numb from holding onto the handle for a while. There's also a really powerful digital V10 motor that can shift effortlessly from fine dust to smashed Cheerios to carpet. A nice extra is the fact that it also quickly shifts to a hand vac so you can use it for small spills or to clean up your car. While I'm a huge fan of cord-free vacs, I'm less enamored with clean-up on most of these models. This one did seem to be easier to empty.

The takeaways: Maybe I'm a snob, but I really am inclined to love anything made by Dyson. Worth noting is that the vacuum can last up to 60 minutes on a single charge. In reality, it depends on the settings you're using, meaning you might end up with only a 10-minute charge.

Shark Vertex Lightweight Cordless Stick Vacuum with DuoClean PowerFins, $299 on Amazon

The benefits:

  • For every hardcore Dyson aficionado, there's a Shark purist. If you love Shark products, this could very well be your favorite of their products yet.

  • It's ultra-light. Having tested out Shark products for years, I can afford to be a bit cranky. Their earlier models were top-heavy making it hard to easily steer your vacuum some of the time.

  • The self-cleaning brushroll. For those of us with longer hair, (or pets!) this means that the hair won't get all tangled and hard to remove.

The details: There is so much to love about the Shark Vertex Ultra Lightweight, that it's hard to limit this review to only a few things. Let's start with the power fins. I love the fact that the retro-looking design is actually a really modern design effect that cleans better because on some level part of it is always in contact with the floor. So instead of brushing the dust around, it almost sweeps it forward until it's all sucked up. There are loads of removable small bits to help you get to hard-to-reach spots, so you can get to the parts of the couch that you stopped trying to clean ages ago. Did I mention how light this model is? Well, it really is. I also like the LED interface and the crevice tool.

The takeaways: It seems like every single time Shark comes out with a new vacuum there really are necessary improvements instead of just another way to make you spend money on something new. I love how strong the suction is on this one for such a lightweight machine.

The verdict: It was a no-brainer for me this time around, Shark all the way. For about half the price of the Dyson Cyclone V10, you have a phenomenal and comparable vacuum in the Shark Vertex. Also. There are fins. I mean, really. Who wouldn't want fins on their vacuum? On a serious note, the Vertex is light, easy to use and wonderfully balanced. There's also a nice storage feature so you can hang it up in your kitchen or garage or someplace that won't take up a ton of space.
