What does back-to-school season mean for us as adults?

As the long weekend comes to a close, many are mourning the lazy, Summer Friday- and barbecue-filled days of summer. But I have to admit—I can’t join in. As a poster child for Capricorns everywhere (a worker bee, practical to a fault, ambition to spare), I’ve always counted down the days, not necessarily to the end of sun dresses and ice cream for lunch, but to the exciting, often hopeful time of back-to-school season. (See photo of me, backpack clad, three weeks before my first day of pre-K.)

I used to buy my school supplies as soon as the list was released. I’d lay everything out on the living room floor and spend hours deciding which colored notebooks made sense for which subjects, and which folders I’d pair with them. I’d put on fashion shows featuring my new back-to-school outfits, while my dad nodded off and pretended to be excited by the fact that I now fit into my sister’s old, much-coveted Jordache jeans.

As an adult, this feeling seems even more urgent. We often get mired down in the day-to-day of work and commuting and holding all the pieces together. We balance so many balls in the air and simply hope nothing gets dropped. Picking up a new hobby or making new friends feels, well, great in theory, but low on our list of priorities.

That’s why this month on HelloGiggles, we’re embracing the back-to-school spirit we had as adolescents with our new editorial series Back to Business.

We’re putting a focus on the things September used to bring—opportunities, a fresh start, and the chance to nail down what it is we truly want this season of life to bring. Whether you’re trying to channel badass boss energy at work, committing to a new workout routine, or maybe even dipping your toe back into the dating pool, now is the time to go for it. And our editors will be doing the same and sharing our experiences with you along the way. Keep checking back here for updates. It’s time to get Back to Business.
