Does the 'Game of Thrones' Episode 3 Teaser Confirm a Favorite Fan Theory?
Two episodes down, four to go. Sunday night's instalment of Game of Thrones got us as settled as one can be before a giant war with the undead-everyone is where they should be (except the Night King, who should be far, far away, if you ask me), and everyone's as ready as they can be to face the terrifying army of White Walkers and wights. In the final scene of the episode, we see the Night King on his intimidating steed, and his fellow fighters, ready to take on the humans at Winterfell.
In the teaser trailer for the third episode, we get very few clues about what will transpire. We see Jon, Dany, Sansa, Brienne, Arya, and others gearing up for battle. There's not a lot of dialogue, but one line in particular sparked interest in an observant fan, namely Daenerys' urgent warning to Jon: "The dead are already here." Of course, this could just be her urging him to focus on the action instead of getting distracted by something else. But on Reddit, this fan wrote that it could mean something else entirely (and it's not good news):
That line happens between Dany and Jon, and felt super significant - but we already see the army of the dead, felt it was too obvious to be their reaction to them.
Then it clicked: The crypt is full of dead people.
All episode they keep repeating and emphasizing how safe it was in the crypt, but its GOT and we cannot have nice things.
So is it possible we have old Starks rising from the crypts? Or is that too far fetched?
PLUS we saw in multiple previews Arya fighting in the crypts with her new weapon...
The Redditor argues that we have already seen the Night King's army approaching, so that's likely not what Dany's referring to in the conversation. Instead, it might be confirmation of a popular theory: that the dead in Winterfell's crypts will rise as wights, too. This idea has popped up a number of times over the years.
This is interesting for a couple of reasons. First, the word "crypt" was said about 130,915 times during the second episode; the show really wants us to think about that part of the castle. Second, who's in the crypts? Deceased Starks, as Jon reminded us when he finally told Dany that his mother was Lyanna Stark. Does that mean Jon and co.'s fallen forebears will become zombified warriors they'll need to fight? That's extremely scary and bad.
It does seem like a bit of a stretch at this point-can desiccated remains of people become wights? I hope not. Could GoT be so cruel? LOL, yep.
