The fifth season of Netflix's The Crown is finally here, and in it, we get a glimpse of Princess Diana's relationships following her separation from Prince Charles. While we mostly see Diana's romance with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan play out in The Crown, there's a small nod to businessman Dodi Al-Fayed, who would go on to be her final boyfriend before her tragic death in the '90s. Dodi and Diana didn't start dating until the summer of 1997 after she ended her relationship with Hasnat.

There's also an entire episode dedicated to Dodi's father, Mohamed Al-Fayed, which led to the introduction of Dodi in the series. He was only featured in season five for a limited time, but he will most likely make his way back to our screens in the sixth and final season of the Netflix hit.

Dodi, who was born Emad El-Din Mohamed Abdel Mena'em Fayed, was the eldest son of Saudi Arabian author Samira Khashoggi and Egyptian businessman Mohamed. As we saw on The Crown, Dodi's father Mohamed owned the luxury department store Harrods as well as the Ritz Hotel. According to Forbes, his estimated net worth in 2022 is $1.9 billion.

Dodi produced blockbuster hits like Chariots of Fire, which won an Oscar in 1982. He also worked on Breaking Glass and The Scarlet Letter, among other films. The Guardian reports that Dodi helped his father with family businesses and had a monthly allowance of £400,000, which would equal $474,764 U.S. dollars in 2022.

He got divorced and was romantically linked to other celebs before dating Diana in 1997

Dodi and his ex Suzanne Gregard split after less than a year together in 1986. Nearly a decade later in 1997, he got engaged to model Kelly Fisher before he abruptly called things off and he started dating Diana. According to Sara Bradford's biography, Diana, Dodi and Diana's relationship went public in the summer of 1997 when they were spotted kissing on his family's yacht by paparazzi.

While most of the world knows Diana passed away during a car crash involving the paparazzi in 1997, many people don't know that Dodi was also in the car. Prior to the tragic accident, Dodi and Diana were vacationing in Paris. At the time, Mohamed Al-Fayed's press spokesman, Michael Cole, told the BBC that the couple had gotten engaged before their death.

According to Deadline, scenes surrounding the infamous car crash will reportedly be included in the final season of The Crown. "While we’re calmly carrying on, it’s fair to acknowledge that there’s a certain anxiety, a palpable sense of being slightly on edge. I mean, there’s bombshell sensitivity surrounding this one," a source told the outlet.
