Former Doctor Who actor Christopher Eccleston will return to the role on one condition: the BBC sacks showrunner Russell T Davies.

Speaking on a recent panel alongside actor Billie Piper, whom Eccleston starred with in 2005’s Doctor Who reboot, he was asked about reprising his much-loved character, the Ninth Doctor.

His answer was direct: “Sack Russell T. Davies, sack Jane Tranter, sack Phil Collinson, sack Julie Gardner, and I’ll come back. So can you arrange that?”

It looks fair to say Eccleston isn’t coming back any time soon.

So, what’s his problem? While Eccleston has never fully elaborated on his difficulties while shooting his first and only season of Doctor Who, it’s clear there were some pretty major clashes.

You can imagine it was all-out war. Speaking of which, watch the first trailer for Alex Garland’s Civil War.

Unless Eccleston can patch things up with production - or they all get simultaneously fired - we can give up hope of ever seeing the Ninth Doctor again.
