P.O.V: it's a Friday night, and you're so ready to wind down for the weekend. You and your BFFs are having the ultimate sleepover filled with marathons of your favorite movies, scream-singing karaoke jam sessions, and ofc, a little self-care moment with your go-to skincare routine. You decide you want to try creating your own face mask to help your skin glow to its full potential, and you're on the hunt for the best household ingredients to do so.

A popular ingredient for DIY face masks is turmeric, which, according to Dr. Kristina Collins, double board-certified dermatologist and founder of Foy by Dr. Collins, has historically been used in Chinese and Indian plant medicine because of its health-boosting and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Dr. Collins breaks down everything there is to know about turmeric, from its bright yellow hue to its skin benefits and which ingredients pair well with the superfood for a DIY turmeric face mask. Of course, we also included a list of ingredients and a step-by-step guide to help you achieve a healthy glow.

What are the benefits of turmeric on your skin?

According to Dr. Collins, any skin type could benefit from incorporating turmeric into their routine, "from younger, oily, acne-prone skin all the way to more mature, dry, aging skin."

"Turmeric benefits to the skin are numerous and may include anti-inflammatory properties to reduce skin diseases like eczema, psoriasis, or acne," Dr. Collins explains. "It also has antioxidant properties and has been shown to help with reduction in wrinkles and hyperpigmentation [a.k.a dark spots]."

How often should you use a turmeric face mask?

If you're wondering how many times you should reach for your turmeric to achieve clear skin with a healthy glow, Dr. Collins says there likely isn't a "hard and fast rule" to how frequently you should use the superfood in your skincare routine. "There is no contraindication to using turmeric daily either orally or topically," Dr. Collins explains.

"However, if this is a DIY mask, things could get messy really fast because staining of the skin could be a major issue," she warns. "I think in that case, oral turmeric is a better choice. If you do try a turmeric face mask, you may want to invest in one that uses a non-staining turmeric extract."

How long should you keep a turmeric face mask on?

Dr. Collins suggests limiting time with a turmeric mask to 10-15 minutes because of the possibility of staining the skin.

When should you avoid using turmeric on your skin?

The last thing you want is to irritate your skin during your spa day, so double-check and test any DIY masks on other patches of skin before applying them to your face.

Dr. Collins says that turmeric should be avoided if you've ever had contact dermatitis, or a rash, to the ingredient in the past. If your skin has ever felt irritated with similar ingredients like ginger, cardamon, curcumin, or kumkum, Dr. Collins advises to stay away from turmeric.

When it comes to creating your own DIY turmeric face mask, the other ingredients you mix with the superfood play a big role in how it'll absorb into your skin. Per Dr. Collins, "Turmeric is poorly absorbed in water so it may work best for absorption in oil-rich formulas. It is enhanced in absorption and function by some other ingredients like ginger root."

According to the National Institute of Health, honey is a natural and inflammatory ingredient that contains antioxidants, which Dr. Collins says help activate the skin-loving properties that turmeric is stacked with. "[Turmeric] works great in formulas with other anti-inflammatories or antioxidants to [increase] results and also works great in exfoliating formulas with alpha hydroxy acids," Dr. Collins tells Seventeen.

Alpha hydroxy acids, or AHAs, smooth skin, and improve your skin's tone and texture, per the FDA. AHAs are commonly found in natural ingredients like fruit, milk, and yogurt. Mixing Greek yogurt into your turmeric face mask will help with the consistency and create a paste for easy application.

Ingredients

  • Turmeric powder, 1 teaspoon

  • Honey, 2 tablespoons

  • Milk or yogurt, 1 to 2 tablespoons

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Stir turmeric powder and honey into a container until it's mixed well. We recommend having a designated bowl for this face mask as turmeric can potentially leave a yellow stain.

  2. Create a paste by adding a small amount of milk or yogurt to the turmeric and honey mixture. Start with 1 tablespoon and add more if desired.

  3. Test the mask on a patch of skin before applying it to your face. There's a possibility that the turmeric may stain your skin, so a little goes a long way.

  4. When you're done testing the product, wash your face with your favorite cleanser and apply the mixture to your face.

  5. Per Dr. Collins' recommendation, let the mask sit for 10 to 15 minutes, or until completely dry.

  6. Wash the mask off and complete your skincare regimen for the ultimate glow! ✨
