This DIY Pumpkin Fairy House Is Too Cute (and So Easy)

Whether for Halloween or to celebrate the turn of the leaves, this sweet pumpkin fairy house will be a welcome addition to your fairy garden. Little ones will love helping you decorate it as a fall crafts project—and then waiting for the fairies and gnomes to move in!

For a carving knife, we recommend a small saw-type knife from a kids pumpkin carving set. If you can't find a blue Hubbard squash, substitute another blue-gray pumpkin variety, such as Jarrahdale.

What You'll Need

  • Medium-size blue Hubbard squash

  • Small brown or green acorn squash

  • Toothpicks

  • Mini glass balls

  • Acorn caps

  • Wood rounds

  • Ginkgo leaves

  • Carving knife

  • Linoleum carving tool

  • Hot-glue gun

Pumpkin Fairy House Step-by-Step

  1. Cut a hole in the bottom of a medium-size blue Hubbard squash; scoop out the pulp and seeds.

  2. Cut out the door, as well as a circular window in the door. Etch vertical lines in the door with a linoleum carving tool, and insert toothpicks (shortened if necessary) to create window grilles.

  3. Lightly draw flower design on either side of door with a pencil, and use linoleum carving tool to etch out. (For a similar look, shop wildflower stencils.)

  4. Insert the door into the opening and hold in place with toothpicks.

  5. For porch lights and awning: Hot-glue mini glass balls into acorn caps to create lights; attach to pumpkin with hot-glue. Cut half to two-thirds off of a wood round; attach to pumpkin, above the door, to create an awning.

  6. For top floor: Cut a hole in the bottom of a small brown or green acorn squash; scoop out the pulp and seeds.

  7. Cut a circular window in acorn squash, and insert toothpicks (shortened if necessary) to create window grilles. Lightly draw flower design around window with a pencil, and use linoleum carving tool to etch out. Stack pumpkins and add wood round steps and ginkgo leaves.
