What You'll Need:
Leather scraps (available at most large crafts stores)
Scissors
Brass lobster clasps (available at hardware stores)
Leather hole punch
Leather rivets
Hammer
Step 1: Cut leather
Cut a piece of leather 7 inches by 1 inch. This will form the base of your key chain. Can't find leather scraps? Try cutting up an old leather bag to create upcycled key chains.
Step 2: Add clasp
Slide leather through the clasp opening. You can make the leather key chain two ways. For the first style, you can simply match the ends together. You will use the leather hole punch to make two holes that match up, just an inch below where the leather is looped through the clasp. The ends of leather will stay apart.
For the second style, pull the leather piece through the clasp opening. Hold the ends of the leather piece together and overlap by 1 inch to create a loop. Punch holes that overlap to secure the leather together (see photo).
Step 3: Punch holes
Punch holes 1 inch down from where it is looped through the clasp opening. Make sure to use a hole punch that is the same size as the rivets. You will punch holes the same way for both styles of leather key chain.
Step 4: Secure
Place rivet back and front and use a hammer to secure together. Pound gently or use a rubber mallet piece to avoid damaging the leather.
