Are DIY Ingrown Toenail Removals Dangerous?

The Doctors are bringing yet another gross-out viral videos trend your way -- prepare yourself for DIY ingrown toenail removals! But is this something you should be doing yourself?

"Don't do that at home," OB/GYN Dr. Nita Landry says of removing your own ingrown toenail.

To avoid the toenail from growing into the skin of the toe and possibly becoming infected, The Doctors recommend cutting them into a square shape. They also say to soak an ingrown toenail in warm water 3 to 4 times per day and to also avoid cramped shoes.

If you are experiencing pus, skin that is bright red on the toenail, swelling, or a fever, The Doctors explain that these could be a sign of an infection related to the ingrown nail and to see a doctor. They note that sometimes the nail has to be removed to solve the issue.
