How to DIY the Glass Hair Trend Taking Instagram by Storm

With so many gorgeous gals taking their tresses to the next level with colors, cuts, and styles, it’s only natural to have a major case of hair envy. If you’ve found yourself in an Instagram rabbit hole lately, you’ve likely scrolled across a glass hair look or two. Celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton popularized the trend with his “swishy glass hair” style he created for Kim Kardashian West back in July 2018, and it quickly became the style to have for the summer, fall, winter, and beyond. The smooth, high-shine trend is defined by light-reflecting strands. While often cut into short blunt crops with razor-sharp ends and styled with a bold center part, the glassy finish can be achieved at any length.

Worn by Bella Hadid, Hailey Baldwin, and more, glass hair is a red carpet-approved style worth trying out, especially if you have a sharp bob or lob. To help you get the look, celebrity hairstylist Leo Izquierdo, who works with Hadid, Baldwin, Sarah Sampaio, and Gizele Oliveira, shares his how-to below. You’ll need:

  • leave-in conditioner

  • smoothing spray

  • blow dryer

  • boar bristle brush

  • flat iron

  • dry oil spray

Instructions:

1. Prep locks with a leave-in conditioner, like the Oribe Supershine Light Moisturizing Cream ($52).

2. Spitz a smoothing spray, like the IGK GOOD BEHAVIOR Spirulina Protein Smoothing Spray ($32), from roots to ends and blow-out hair with a boar bristle brush. “The product is heat-activated and uses spirulina and keratin proteins and innovative bonding polymers to mimic the very shiny, smooth look of a keratin treatment,” Izquierdo says.

3. After hair is dry, pump up the shine with another spritz of smoothing spray before flat ironing in small 2-inch sections.

4. Finish the look with a dry oil spray, like R+Co Neon Lights Dry Oil Spray ($29), to lock in intense shine.
