Disneyland Will Close Due to Coronavirus — What Should You Do If You Have a Trip Planned?

Updated Friday, March 13, 2020 9:45 a.m. ET: Disney World and Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida are following in Disneyland’s footsteps and will be closing parks beginning Sunday, March 15th. Disney World will automatically extend tickets purchased for admission between March 12-March 31, 2020 to be used any date through December 15, 2020. If you are unable to visit Disney World by December 15, you may apply the value of the ticket toward the purchase of a ticket for a future date. You can read more details on Disney World’s website. Universal Orlando’s Hotels and CityWalk will remain open despite the park’s closure. Universal has created packages for visitors who need to rebook but guests need to call the following number for more information: 1-877-801-9720.

Original story, published March 12, 2020: Disneyland is the latest victim of the Coronavirus as we just learned that the park located in Anaheim, California will close effective March 14th, 2020. There have been no reported cases of the COVID-19 strain of Coronavirus in the park but Disney wants to be as cautious as possible and help prevent the virus from spreading.

“After carefully reviewing the guidelines of the Governor of California’s executive order and in the best interest of our guests and employees, we are proceeding with the closure of Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park, beginning the morning of March 14 through the end of the month,” the company said in a statement.

We certainly applaud Disneyland for taking any steps necessary to keep guests safe, but our hearts are breaking for all of the kids who will now be missing their trip to the happiest place on earth. What are families who already have trips planned to Disneyland supposed to do? Glad you asked.

While it certainly is an inconvenience, Disneyland wants to make sure you and your family still get to experience the magic that is Disney. If you want to rebook your vacation or receive a full refund, you need to contact Disneyland at (714) 520-5050. They do ask that you please understand that they will be experiencing a large volume of calls so try to be as patient as possible. They will be offering full refunds to those who wish to cancel and rebooking those who wish to come at a later date.

Unfortunately, if you have flights booked to get to Disneyland, there’s not much Disneyland can do to help with your flight. You will need to contact your airline to rebook your flights but most major airlines are waiving all cancellation and change fees due to the COVID-19 outbreak so it shouldn’t cost you anything to reschedule or cancel. What about people currently at Disney who are booked to stay beyond the 14th? “The Hotels of Disneyland Resort will remain open until Monday, March 16 to give guests the ability to make necessary travel arrangements; Downtown Disney will remain open,” the company said in a statement.
