Disney+ Show "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series" Releases First Trailer

We’ve been anticipating High School Musical: The Musical: The Series pretty much since it was first announced in 2017 — I mean, even the Zac Efron is down for a cameo — and the first official trailer is finally here.

Set 15 years after the events of the first High School Musical movie, the very meta series takes us back to East High to follow a group of high school juniors as they prepare a theatrical rendition of the DCOM classic — meaning we’ll see them reenact our favorite moments from Gabriella, Troy, Sharpay and co. on stage (but through our screens).

“When I heard that the high school where High School Musical was shot had never staged a production of High School Musical: The Musical, I was shocked, inspired, and triggered as a millennial,” we can hear East High’s new drama teacher Miss Jenn (played by Broadway veteran Kate Reinders) proclaim in the trailer. “I’ve seen the original movie 37 times and the first 15 minutes of both sequels,” student choreographer Carlos (Frankie A. Rodriguez) then utters — which ouch.

As they prepare for the first-ever production of High School Musical: The Musical at East High, the series follows Ricky (played by Joshua Bassett) as the lead. Ricky is "a sarcastic yet charismatic” skater that auditions for the school's play in a ploy to get back with his ex-girlfriend Nini (played by Olivia Rodrigo) — the rising star of East High's theater program.

The trailer introduces us to confessional-style videos from the students — which means on top of the theatricals galore (and, you know, challenging high school’s status quo and all that), we’ll also get one-on-one intel on all the drama. HSM meets reality TV? Sign us up!

“I know we’re not a couple anymore,” Ricky narrates in the trailer. In a very Ross Geller move, he admits it was his “idea to take a pause,” but Nini is now dating E.J. (played by Matt Cornett), the school star athlete with thespian dreams. They are both auditioning (seemingly sans competition) for the roles of Troy and Gabriella — E.J. suitably clad in Troy’s basketball jersey — but it all comes crumbling down when Ricky lands the role of Troy.

Along with the trailer, Disney also unveiled the first look into the new generation of Wildcats with a new set of photos recently — and they are giving us major nostalgia. The new photos show precisely the audition process and we get our first look at Ricky taking on the stage with a guitar in hand and Vans on feet (in true sk8ter boy style) as Nini and E.J. watch closely from the audience alongside E.J.’s cousin Ashlyn (Julia Lester).

We get a group shot of the cast — including new-girl Gina (Sofia Wylie), Ricky’s BFF Big Red (Larry Saperstein), as well as Nini's BFF and beauty guru Kourtney (Dara Reneé) — huddled together over what we’re hoping is Kelsi’s former piano; as well as our first glimpse at Nini playing the coveted role of Gabriella Montez, donning Vanessa Hudgens’s iconic red dress from HSM’s ending number “We’re All in This Together.”

But we’ll have to wait a couple more months to find out how the whole story unfolds as the 10-episode series will be premiering on November 12 to coincide with the official launch of Disney’s new streaming platform, Disney+.
