Disney Recipe: How to Make the Blue Milk Chai From Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Could this Disney recipe become the next viral drink to sweep across the internet during quarantine? Perhaps, especially if everyone’s grown tired of their dalgona coffee and whipped strawberry milk as we head into week who-even-knows-anymore of isolation. Or perhaps you’re just looking for something to pair with the batch of pancake cereal you just whipped up.

Enter Bantha Chai, or blue milk chai, which is typically served at Disneyland’s Star Wars–themed Galaxy’s Edge. Time Out L.A. originally published the recipe for the concoction from Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook by Chelsea Monroe-Cassel and Marc Sumerak. For the uninitiated, a bantha is a large wooly-mammoth-looking horned creature originally from the planet of Tatooine—and apparently their fictional milk makes for great drinks.

Inspired by the beloved Disneyland drink, here’s a recipe for Bantha Chai that does not require having an actual bantha around.

Ingredients (makes one serving)

  • 2 cups rice milk (or milk of your choice)

  • 2 tsp. arrowroot powder

  • 1 blue butterfly pea tea bag

  • 1-inch piece fresh gingerroot, thinly sliced

  • Pinch of ground cardamom

  • Pinch of ground mace

  • 1–2 tbsp. sugar, to taste

Directions

  1. In a small saucepan, whisk together the milk and arrowroot powder. Place over medium-low heat.

  2. Add the remaining ingredients to the pan and combine, whisking occasionally, until steaming.

  3. Let mixture steep about 5 minutes, until it is a rich blue and smells strongly of spice.

  4. Remove from heat and strain into a mug. Enjoy right away.

Honestly, even if you have no clue about the Stars Wars reference behind the drink or have never tried to re-create a Disney recipe, this one sounds pretty darn delicious and quite easy to make. Who among us doesn't need something new to spice up (pun intended) our days while we're bored in the house and in the house bored? We can definitely see Instagram getting on board with this blue drink...but only time will tell.
