Disney’s Hercules Is Getting a Live-Action Remake—And Twitter Users Have Some Casting Requests

Hercules is officially the next Disney classic getting the live-action treatment.

Honestly, if someone told me a year ago that the Russo brothers—you know, the filmmakers behind Avengers: Endgame and Infinity War—would be producing the remake of the 1997 animated classic, I would have thought they’d lost it. However, this is 2020; there are no rules, and the Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news on April 30.

Everyone’s favorite musical version of the Greek myth is being brought to life again, this time by Joe and Anthony Russo along with writer David Callaham (Expendables), and is gearing up to start casting. Whoever gets chosen to play Hercules, Megara, the Muses, etc., are going to have some very big togas to fill. Remember “I Won’t Say (I’m in Love)”? Arguably one of the best songs in Disney animated movie history.

According to THR, Ariana Grande’s performance of the number (in which she sang every part) during The Disney Family Singalong has sparked rumors that she will be playing the iconic part. Idris Elba’s and Ryan Gosling’s names have reportedly been floated around as well. The Russos recently produced Chris Hemsworth’s Netflix movie Extraction, so who’s to say we won’t get an Australian Hercules. Wishful thinking?

Obviously, Twitter users have a lot of opinions about the cast. Let’s break down some suggestions:

Hercules

Basically, every hunky actor with a following is being thrown around by Twitter stans. For example, Outlander’s Sam Heughan. And Zac Efron

You get it.

Megara

This is where Twitter is truly divided. Some are all in for Grande, who would definitely nail it, but others are Team Zendaya, since the actor and singer would also hit it out of the park. Personally, I’m hoping for Zendaya…mostly because I really want Grande to be cast as Elphaba in the movie version of Wicked, but that’s a whole separate conversation (cough, Dove Cameron as Glinda, cough).

Pain and Panic

There have been a few requests for Pain and Panic, including the pairing of Seth Rogan and Michael Cera, but there is actually only one correct answer:

Give me John Mulaney and Nick Kroll or you can keep it.

Phil

Danny DeVito. Send tweet.

The Muses

Amber Riley. Jennifer Hudson. Janelle Monáe. Kelly Rowland. Keke Palmer. Normani. Twitter could do this all day.

Hades

There’s a rumor that Tom Hiddleston has already been cast, and Twitter seems to be here for it.

I’m begging you, Disney. Don’t mess this up.
