A Dirty Dancing Sequel Is Happening—Here’s Everything We Know So Far

Dirty Dancing is one of the most iconic films of the ’80s—and I dare say all time?

The 1987 movie starred Jennifer Grey as Frances “Baby” Houseman, a sheltered young woman spending the summer of 1963 with her family at a resort in the Catskills where she falls in love with Johnny Castle, a sexy dance instructor played by Patrick Swayze. A tip of the hat to the great Jerry Orbach as Baby’s doctor dad too—because when he’s wrong he says he’s wrong.

For a certain generation of women (ahem, mine), it was a deeply formative movie. The phenomenal dancing and wildly popular soundtrack defined a moment in time—and now, 33 years later, a sequel is in the works. (Lest we forget, the Dirty Dancing-verse did get a reimagining in 2004 with Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights.)

Not many details have been released at this point, but here's everything we know so far.

Who will be in the cast?

Grey is set to star and will also executive produce the movie, but Swayze sadly passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2009 and Orbach died in 2004—so it’s unclear how those losses would be handled in a new movie.

What’s the plot?

“It will be exactly the kind of romantic, nostalgic movie that the franchise’s fans have been waiting for and that have made it the biggest-selling library title in the company’s history,” Lionsgate CEO said, per The Guardian

Will there be music moments?

“I've Had the Time of My Life” from the original Dirty Dancing won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, while other songs from the soundtrack like “Be My Baby” and “Hungry Eyes” defined important scenes. So it will be safe to assume a lot of thought will go into the picks for the sequel, we just don’t have much info on that yet.

What’s the fan reaction like?

With something as beloved as Dirty Dancing, there is naturally going to be some debate as to whether we should just leave well enough alone, especially considering the fact that Swayze can’t be a part of the new movie. But others are simply excited to continue Baby’s story.

This post will be updated as more information becomes available.
