A common misconception is that your bathroom, where you wash and clean yourself, is the dirtiest place in your home. But according to a study conducted by the National Science Foundation (NSF) on germs in houses, the kitchen actually has the most germs and bacteria.

The NSF test was conducted by swabbing different areas in multiple kitchens for coliform bacteria. This is a family of bacteria that includes Salmonella and E.coli and is an indicator of potential fecal contamination on a surface.

The study found that 75% of dish sponges and rags had coliform bacteria present on them, more than any other area in the kitchen that was tested. Many would not expect that the tool you use to wash your dishes is actually the dirtiest thing in your kitchen, but it can be if you don’t change it frequently or properly sanitize it.

Besides your sponge, there are many other hidden sources of bacteria in your home.
