Digimon Adventure 02 movie Wormmon

There’s a new Digimon movie on the way, bringing back the cast of Digimon Adventure 02 — one of the fan-favorite anime series in the greater Digimon franchise. We first got a teaser for the film back in 2021, followed by the new movie’s first trailer (it’s incredible) earlier this year. Now, we’ve got a good look at the opening scene.

Toei Animation published the opening scene, for Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning, on its YouTube channel yesterday. The opening song video lasts for about a minute and a half, and shows the entire 02 gang you know and love.

In it, we see Motomiya Daisuke working as a ramen chef alongside his Veemon – something we saw the seed of in Last Evolution Kizuna – Ichijouji Ken studying at university, and the rest of the 02 team working away at their jobs alongside their partner Digimon. We also see a very brief glimpse at new character Oawada Rui, a Digivice-wielder who was teased in the film’s official trailer.

It’s all very cute, and is backed with a very upbeat and nostalgic song, Target: Red Crash by the late Wada Kouji. The song was previously used as the first opening theme for Digimon Adventure 02 in Japan. It looks to be largely untouched here, which is probably a good thing given Wada Kouji’s untimely death in 2016 — it’s great that his legacy creating some of the most iconic songs in anime is being preserved here.

The reveal of the opening scene for the new Digimon movie comes not long after Discotek Media revealed it was remastering the original Digimon movies. Discotek has taken great care to remaster and restore as much content as possible, including its soundtrack, although sadly the Angelamon short won’t be included.

Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning is set to be released in theaters on October 27 in Japan, with an English dub set to be released in theaters in the US on November 8, 2023. The English dub will see the return of many of the voice actors from the original English dub, though some were not able to return.
