Every year the royal family comes together to celebrate the Queen’s official birthday in June in a military parade called Trooping the Colour. Here’s how Meghan Markle’s first appearance at the annual event compared to the Duchess of Cambridge’s and Diana, Princess of Wales’s debuts at the family celebration.

Diana made her debut at the Trooping the Colour on June 13, 1981 just a few weeks before she wed Prince Charles in July. For the occasion, she wore a patterned blue skirt suit with a ruffled white collar and a matching blue floral hat.

For the carriage ride before the balcony appearance, Diana rode with her future brother-in-law Prince Andrew in their own carriage. On the balcony, Diana and Charles stood directly to the right of the Duke of Edinburgh and the Queen.

On June 11, 2011, a little bit over a month after marrying Prince William, Duchess Kate still looked like a bride during her first Trooping the Colour wearing a structured white coat dress by Alexander McQueen along with a black hat.

Just like Diana, Kate also rode in the carriage with Prince Andrew but she was also joined by the Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry. For the balcony appearance, she and William stood to the right of the Earl and Countess of Wessex who stood to the right of the Queen.

Exactly three weeks after marrying Prince Harry, the newly-minted Duchess of Sussex made her Trooping the Colour debut wearing a light pink dress by Carolina Herrera with a Philip Treacy hat.

Before her first moment on Buckingham Palace's balcony, she rode in a carriage with her husband Prince Harry and the Queen's cousin the Duke of Kent. On the balcony, she stood next to Prince Harry slightly behind the Duchess of Cambridge.
