Find Out Who Died in the 'Grey's Anatomy' Season 19 Finale

The big questions heading into the Grey's Anatomy Season 19 finale were whether Simone would go through with her wedding to Trey (she didn't) and whether Meredith would get back together with Nick (she did)—not whether Dr. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) would drop dead in the operating room floor. But that last question is the one on everyone's mind now that the two-hour television event, which saw Dr. Altman collapse just as she was about to begin surgery on Sam Sutton (Sam Page), has aired.

Did Teddy die in the Grey's Anatomy Season 19 finale?

It's unclear whether Dr. Altman actually died at the end of the episode. All we know is that she'd been complaining of a tooth ache throughout the two-hour season finale and then, boom, she was on the floor getting shocked with defibrillator paddles and flatlining.

For what it's worth, Deadline reported on the same day the finale aired that Raver had renewed her contract for Season 20. Seems like a good sign she'll be back!

Why did Teddy collapse in the Grey's Anatomy Season 19 finale?

We're not doctors, but we are veteran viewers of Grey's Anatomy, and our guess is that the pain Altman had been experiencing was either related to something other than her tooth or it was the result of a serious infection. In the latter case, it's strange to think that Dr. Altman, the chief of surgery, would have overlooked the severity of her problem (didn't she so much as spike a fever?). But she did ask Dr. Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli) to look in her mouth for an abscess, so maybe that was indeed the culprit. According to Mayo Clinic, "leaving a tooth abscess untreated can lead to serious, even life-threatening, complications."

Who died in the Grey's Anatomy Season 19 finale?

Patient Sam Sutton, Jo's quasi love-interest and Link's decidedly mortal enemy, died in the Season 19 finale. He had to have, right? He was rushed into surgery after starting to bleed out internally, but Dr. Altman couldn't operate on him because, well, she'd collapsed. With no attendings in sight, interns Lucas and Simone jumped in to operate on Sutton—but their efforts were apparently unsuccessful. By the time Dr. Owen Hunt arrived, there was a huge puddle of Sutton's blood on the floor.
