How Did "The Umbrella Academy"'s Ben / Number Six Die?
Season two of The Umbrella Academy has fans freaking out over their favorite Hargreeves siblings, especially after that MAJOR cliffhanger that changes everything for season three. But no matter what happens each season, fans are still wondering whether we will finally get to know what happened to Ben/Number Six. While his death happened before the start of season one, fans are still curious how the ghostly brother met his fate and why he's still around. Luckily, season two gave us some answers, while also leaving us with some big questions.

How did Ben originally die in The Umbrella Academy.
This is still a big mystery. Even in the flashbacks in season two, not much is known about Ben's death when he was younger. All that's known is that he was killed during a mission and it hit the entire Umbrella Academy hard.
How was Ben still able to stay a ghost?
It was revealed in season two that Ben was able to stay in this world because he didn’t want to move on. While Klaus believed that it was always his fault that Ben never crossed over, Ben revealed to Vanya that it was really his own choice.
How did Ben die in The Umbrella Academy season two?
While trying to calm Vanya down, Ben traveled into her subconscious and was able to talk her down. However, while in there, he wasn't able to hold his form for long and had to let go.
How is Ben still alive in the season two finale?
Surprise! While the Umbrella Academy believed that they were back to their respective time at the end of season two, it seems like the timeline got a little messed up when they got back. Upon their return, not only is Sir Hargreeves back, but Ben is still alive and is part of the Sparrow Academy.
While it's not entirely explained, there's a good chance that the reason why Ben is still alive and seems different than ghost Ben is because they're in an alternate timeline. Since they were missing from their original timeline and Sir Hargreeves never picked them to be a part of the Umbrella Academy, Ben (who was dead, so his presence didn't change from all the jumping through time) was never killed during the battle.
