THE LONG-AWAITED second volume of Invincible Season 2 has finally arrived on Prime Video, and the mid-season premiere wasted no time in

Mark returns to Earth with his alien half-brother, only to get almost immediately recruited to go back into space again, joining Atom Eve, The Immortal, Bulletproof, Robot, Black Samson, and Monster Girl on a mission to intercept a Martian ship that has been overtaken by hordes of squid-like parasites with a hive mind. (That was quite a sentence to write out.)

Meanwhile, back on Earth, the remaining Guardians of the Globe—Rex Splode, Shrinking Rae, and Dupli-Kate—kick back and relax at headquarters... until they get a communiqué from Cecil that the Lizard League have invaded the GDA.

A brutal, bloody battle ensues, in which Dupli-Kate and Shrinking Rae are both killed. All of Dupli-Kate's doubles are dismembered by Komodo Dragon, before she herself is murdered when the super-strong reptile throws her body against that of her clone. Shrinking Rae attempts the old "explode them from the inside" trick, shrinking right down and vanishing inside Komodo's mouth, but he turns out to be just as strong on the inside as the outside, and when she grows back up to regular size, she is crushed inside his body.

What happens to Rex?

Rex finally succeeds in killing Komodo Dragon by using his powers to charge a coin with potential energy—but it comes at a price. Komodo Dragon bites off his entire hand, only realizing too late what it is holding, causing his head to explode.

A bloodied, exhausted Rex is then held at gunpoint from behind by King Lizard, and the episode ends before we find out what happens to him.

On the one hand, the fact that Rex's fate is left on a cliffhanger means that it's likely he will live: it would be odd to kill off two characters, only to then wait to reveal that Rex dies too at the beginning of the next episode. But this is Invincible, so who knows.

Rex shows uncharacteristic self-awareness earlier in the episode, sharing a tender moment with Eve which demonstrates the growth that the brash, immature character is going through. And of course, this is exactly the sort of thing that writers love to do before they kill a character off.

Still, given the personality and humor that Jason Mantzoukas brings to the role, let's hope he survives to crack wise another day.
