Forever a legend. After the release of the new Fast X movie in 2023, many people are asking: how did Paul Walker die?

Paul Walker played Brian O’Conner, one of the main characters in The Fast & Furious franchise. He joined the film on a whim in the early 2000s and the saga has become one of the most best-selling movie franchises in history. “The way it came about was really bizarre, they came to me and presented this idea, that’s all it was at the time … They didn’t even have a screenplay, they didn’t have anything,” he told Access Hollywood in 2001.

How did Paul Walker die? On November 30, 2013, at approximately 3:30 p.m. Walker was involved in a single-vehicle car crash with his friend Roger Rodas. He was 40. The actor was driving in the Valencia neighborhood in Santa Clarita, California at a speed of over 100 mph in a 45 mph zone. Walker died of the combined effects of traumatic and thermal injuries while Rodas, the driver, died of multiple traumatic injuries. No drugs or alcohol were detected in either men.

Kristy McCracken, the investigator for the Los Angeles coroner, described how the car was driving at an unsafe speed in an easterly direction. “For an unknown reason, the driver lost control of the vehicle and the vehicle partially spun around and began to travel in a south-easterly direction.” The coroner report stated, “The vehicle then struck a sidewalk and the driver’s side struck a tree and then a light post. The force of these collisions caused the vehicle to spin 180 degrees and it continued to travel in an easterly direction. The passenger side of the vehicle then struck a tree and it then burst into flames.” The coroner said the Porsche was found “totaled with major traffic collision damage all around and it appeared that the vehicle was almost split in half.”

Walker died while the seventh installment of The Fast & Furious franchise was being filmed. In a social media statement, The Fast & Furious team decided to film the rest of the movie in honor of Walker’s legacy. “We came together and all felt the only choice was to continue,” the statement read. “We believe our fans want that, and we believe Paul would want that too. Paul had already shot his dramatic scenes and most of his action for FAST & FURIOUS 7, and it’s among the strongest work of his career.”

His younger brothers Caleb and Cody Walker were used as stand-bys for the rest of the filming. The character of Brian O’Conner retired from the film series after Furious 7. The hit song “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth was commissioned for the film and is heard when Dom and Brian are driving out at the end of the film.

Paul Walker’s legacy

Since his death, Walker has had a profound legacy on the series. His daughter Meadow was 15 when he died and had her first appearance in the beloved film series in Fast X 10 years later in 2023. She posted a lovely tribute to her father on Instagram, “The first fast was released when I was one year old! I grew up on set watching my father, Vin, Jordana, Michelle, Chris and more on the monitors. Thanks to my dad, I was born into the fast family. I can’t believe now I get to be up there too. With those who have been around to see me grow up. Thank you @louisleterrierpro for your kindness, patience and support. It feels like you’ve been part of the family since we started, I’m happy it’s just the beginning. Special shoutout to my dad’s best friend who is now my best friend @bbirtell, this wouldn’t have been possible without you. I am so blessed to be able to honor my father’s legacy and share this with him forever x I love you all so much.”

Co-star Ludacris also remembered Walker very fondly and gave some props to his daughter. On if he misses him on SiriusXM, he said, “Of course, there is. I always miss him. You know carrying on his legacy and you know his daughter being on set and his brothers being on set. [Them] constantly consulting and telling us what they feel. How he can be incorporated and how his legacy can be incorporated. He’s present spiritually at all times, and we miss him in the physical and the spirit. But believe that every day.”

Diesel, who plays Brian’s best friend Dom Toretto in the film series, remembered Walker’s legacy and extended his family over to Meadow and at times she even took care of him. During promotion, Diesel cried over the loss of his co-star at Brazil Comic Con in December 2016. “We’ve felt the loss. The last three years have been some of the hardest of my life because of losing my brother like that,” he told Entertainment Tonight at the time. “I’d been to Brazil two times before, and both times that I’ve been here, I’ve always been with my brother, Pablo.”

“It was a lot of tissues, and it was a hard morning for me yesterday because I was here,” he continued. “But the irony is the whole cast reached out, and his daughter, Meadow, reached out, and all that stuff helps you get through it.”

“The whole point of the Fast and Furious saga is the idea that brotherhood can be created by bond and not necessarily blood,” Diesel told Extra. “So much of Fast and Furious is celebrated by brotherhood that’s eternal. I never in a million years imagined 21 years ago that, beyond the script and the film, there would be this other guiding light, this other driving force that propels you to be as passionate as you can and manifest in the movie. … We’re all mortals, but love is immortal.”
