They Did *Not* Just Kill Off Halstead on 'Chicago P.D.'

From Country Living

  • Chicago P.D. left fans with a major cliffhanger about Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer).

  • In the last seconds of the episode "Absolution" Jay was shot, and it's unclear if he survived.

Jay Halstead, are you okay!?

Chicago P.D. (well, all the One Chicago shows, really) loves to toy with our emotions. Just a few weeks back, viewers were thrilled about Burgess’s pregnancy announcement. Now, fans are caught in an emotional spiral once again—but over something way less happy.

Last night’s big struggle was over Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer), an original character who’s been on the series since 2014. “Absolution” revealed that Halstead had been kidnapped, and the rest of the Chicago crew was responsible for finding him and bringing him home, ideally alive.

Unfortunately, as TVLine reported, he was kidnapped alongside Marcus’s wife Angela. Some will remember that Halstead put Marcus behind bars, where Marcus was eventually killed. Halstead decided to tell Angela who he really is, and that her husband was innocent. That poorly timed revelation prompted her to say, “You deserve to die” and now he might.

Angela kept her rage in check just long enough for Halstead to escape, take out the bad guys, and return to her in order to save her life. But she shocked everyone when she reached for a gun and shot Halstead. The screen cut to “To be continued” and the audience collectively lost it.

“If Jay is out, I am out,” one person wrote with several others agreeing. “I totally said a prayer for Jay at the end of the episode then remembered it’s a tv show,” another wrote. “But prayers for Halstead.” One super fan even suggested, "The rest of 2019 is cancelled" and they're not wrong.

His fate remains very unclear at this point. Actor Jesse didn’t make us feel any better, telling CinemaBlend twice that “This could be the end for Jay” and “This could spell the end.” He also tweeted after the program ended with, “Sorry it didn’t end differently.” Notice "end" is mentioned on each of those occasions.

It seems impossible to imagine Chicago P.D. without Halstead, so we’re hoping he pulls through. After all, the rest of the unit was already on the property, so there’s a chance he could be saved. Too bad we have to wait until 2020 to find out!
