Update 9/21/2022:

The Did-Harry-Styles-Spit-or-Not-Spit saga continues. Chris Pine’s team has already denied all rumors that Harry spit on him at the Venice Film Festival, and Harry himself hilariously addressed the drama a couple weeks back (see below). Now, Don’t Worry Darling filmmaker Olivia Wilde has entered the chat.

During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the actress and director was asked about the spit speculation. Reading from his notecard, Colbert asks, “Did Harry Styles spit on Chris Pine? Why or why not? Support your answer.”

“No, he did not. But I think it’s a perfect example of, like, people will look for drama anywhere they can. Harry did not spit on Chris, in fact,” she affirmed.

Update 9/7/2022:

After days of mounting anticipation, Harry Styles has finally addressed rumors that he spat on Chris Pine at the Venice Film Festival, but it wasn't the formal statement you’d expect. Harry graced the stage during his concert on September 7, where he poked fun at the rumors in a video captured by Twitter user @harrysbluevans. “It’s very wonderful to be back in New York,” Harry began. “I just popped very quickly to Venice to spit on Chris Pine,” he added as the audience was overcome with laughter. “Fear not, we’re back,” he joked. LOL! Way to set the record straight, Harry.

If you’ve spent the past 48 hours reading up on all the drama surrounding the Don’t Worry Darling cast at the Venice Film Festival, then hi, hello, and welcome to the club.

Just in case you have not (we understand, it’s a lot), let us quickly fill you in. The Olivia Wilde-directed thriller premiered at the 79th Venice International Film Festival, after weeks of speculated tension between Olivia, Florence Pugh, and Harry Styles. Then, on Monday, Florence skipped the film’s first press event in Venice — Variety reported that Florence’s flight from Budapest, Hungary, where she’s filming Dune: Part Two, wouldn’t land until after the photo call.

But she was on the red carpet for the premiere that night, alongside Olivia, Harry, Gemma Chan, Chris Pine, Sydney Chandler, and Nick Kroll. Although, fans couldn’t help but notice that neither Harry, Olivia, nor Florence stood next to each other.

But, if you can believe it, the drama surrounding this cast gets even messier.

In a video that’s circulated the internet at warp speed, posted by @Mac70J on Twitter, Harry walks into the theater for the premiere. Chris Pine sits next to him and claps as he enters — but as Harry bends down to sit, he appears to spit on Chris. Yes, you read that correctly. Harry seems to spit on Chris.

After the potential incident, Chris stops clapping, looks down at his lap, then leans back and laughs. Meanwhile, Olivia, seated opposite him, continues to clap.

We’ve all been analyzing this clip for hours, but in a statement to People on Tuesday, Chris’s team denied all accusations that Harry spit on Chris.

“This is a ridiculous story — a complete fabrication and the result of an odd online illusion that is clearly deceiving and allows for foolish speculation,” a rep for the actor said. “Just to be clear, Harry Styles did not spit on Chris Pine. There is nothing but respect between these two men and any suggestion otherwise is a blatant attempt to create drama that simply does not exist.”

So while spit-gate appears to be cleared up, we’re still thinking about Chris’s deadpan expression during a Don’t Worry Darling press conference earlier in the weekend — you know, the one where Harry said his favorite part about the movie is that “it feels like a movie.”
