Major spoilers for You seasons 1 and 2 below.

In season 2 of Netflix’s You, bookstore manager-turned-serial killer Joe Goldberg leaves New York City for a fresh start in Los Angeles, considered, in his words, “the worst city in the world.” He adopts a new identity, Will Bettelheim, and starts work at luxe grocery store-slash-bookstore, Anavrin. He meets a new cast of characters, including his new obsession Love Quinn, and her twin brother, Forty Quinn.

Love and Forty’s parents own Anavrin and are extremely wealthy. Love works in the bakery, while Forty manages the store. At the start of the sophomore season, we learn that Forty is a recovering addict who dreams of writing a hit movie. He and Joe (aka Will) form an unlikely friendship, and after Forty reads The Dark Face of Love by Guinevere Beck (remember, Joe’s victim from season 1), he’s inspired to pen the screenplay.

But as Forty begins to research Beck’s life, he concludes that Dr. Nicky didn’t kill her — her ex-boyfriend (who, unbeknown to him, is Joe) did. “She mentions him a few times in the book,” Forty says. “Causally. Never even by name. He seems harmless. But he murdered her in a jealous rage and he framed Dr. Nicky.”

When he announces his revelation to Candace — Joe’s other ex, who Forty’s been seeing — she confirms that Joe is Beck’s killer. “If you had a brain, you could read between the lines of your own script and see that you cracked the case,” she tells Forty. “It’s Joe.” He travels to New York to visit Dr. Nicky in prison and confirm his suspicions. When he returns to L.A., he texts Love to warn her about Joe and orders the two of them to meet him at Anavrin.

During a heated argument, Forty pulls a gun on Joe. But before he pulls the trigger, Forty is shot and killed by Officer David Fincher, a Los Angeles cop who was close with Joe’s neighbors, Ellie and Delilah, and arrived on the scene.

Although Joe wasn’t responsible for Forty’s death, he — once again — still gets away with murder and literally *every* other sinister deed he’s ever done. The final moments of the season reveal that Love and Joe are expecting a baby and have relocated to Northern California for (an attempt at) a quieter life. But of course, Joe’s dark and twisted mind travels with him wherever he goes.
