Did Andrew Cunanan really eat dog food? Because this is something we need an answer to *now*

Well, we’ve finally made it to the end of the long and winding American Crime Story road, and we’re back where we all began: The murder of Gianni Versace. While for the past few episodes we’ve been working backwards, finally making it back to Andrew’s childhood in the penultimate episode, we’re back in 1997 now. Andrew Cunanan shoots and kills Gianni Versace on the steps of his Miami mansion. While some questions are answered, not all of them are answered, and there’s one we need answered like, yesterday — uh, did Andrew Cunanan really eat dog food?

Let’s remember for a second that American Crime Story, while based on a real story, is actually a lot of fiction. There are so many loose ends with Andrew Cunanan’s story, because he killed himself before he was captured. The Miami Police and FBI still don’t really have clear motives for any of his murders. But…the dog food?

It is…maybe true. According to Newsweek, who is also trying to get to the bottom of this dog food debate, “could not verify this detail, but the footage from the real-life [crime scene] scene does confirm that the real Cunanan left the [house] trashed before he killed himself.” The real life crime scene was also pretty bare when it came to food, which probably means that Cunanan was eating whatever he could within his hiding spot — including dog food.

Now knowing that, ACS’s showrunner, Ryan Murphy, would like to go on the record about the dog food with a great big, HELL YES HE ATE IT. While talking to E!, Murphy cleared up this whole debate:

“Andrew Cunanan definitely ate dog food. Darren [Criss, who plays him on the show] did not eat dog food, although I don’t know what that stuff was, but whenever I would watch the edits, it would make me gag,” he explained. “It was wet and moldy. I wouldn’t recommend it.”

Murphy also explains that while this season was based off of Maureen Orth’s book, Vulgar Favors: the Assassination of Gianni Versace, he had his own team doing research. And somewhere along the way turned up this dog food fact, and okay, sure, Ryan Murphy. Whatever you say.
