He Did It Again—Yep, Another World Record for Katibin

Indonesia's Kiromal Katibin made history again by setting a new men's Speed world record during the qualification round at this weekend's Chamonix World Cup.

Granted, you'll be forgiven if you feel like you've already read this news, as 21-year-old Katibin broke the world record approximately one week ago during the qualification round at a World Cup in Villars, Switzerland.

But in his most recent history-making run, Katibin clocked a time of 5.009 seconds, beating his short-lived previous record by approximately 0.04 seconds. In doing so, Katibin secured his sixth world record of the past 14 months (First in Salt Lake City in May 2021, then this year in Seoul, Salt Lake City, twice in Villars, and now in Chamonix).

The Speed qualification round at Chamonix was not livestreamed, but footage of Katibin's new world record can be viewed on the IFSC's Twitter account, @ifsclimbing. Footage of the historic achievement immediately received a reply from the women's world record holder, Poland's Aleksandra Miroslaw, who queried whether Katibin could go even faster in the forthcoming final round--possibly even breaking the famed five-second barrier. Miroslaw tweeted, "Sub 5 tomorrow?"

Although Katibin has consistently been the fastest Speed climber in the men's division, he received some significant competition last weekend in Villars from China's team; a costly slip resulted in a 5th place finish for Katibin, while Team China swept the podium. But Katibin will have a chance to get back to the top of the podium this weekend in Chamonix. The final round will be viewable on the IFSC's YouTube channel here.
