Dickinson author's tale goes nuts with young readers

May 20—DICKINSON — Squirrels are a common sight in Dickinson's backyards, but one local resident has transformed these furry creatures into the charming heroes of her new picture book. RubyAnn Stiegelmeier, a local businesswoman and Dickinson resident, recently released her first children's book, "Sir Rupert and the Battle of the Squirrels." This delightful story has quickly become a favorite among young readers, igniting creativity and joy throughout North Dakota.

Stiegelmeier's journey began with a simple intention, to create a fun and engaging story for her nieces and nephews.

"I wanted my nieces and nephews to have a hilarious story that encourages creative problem-solving and cooperation," she said. "This book was originally meant to be a gift for family members, and the project just took off."

Publishing a book can be daunting, but Stiegelmeier found support from the North Dakota Council on the Arts (NDCA).

"Reach out to the North Dakota Council on the Arts," she advises aspiring authors. "The team is so encouraging and knowledgeable, and they also have grant funding available for certain projects. This book is a reality because of the support I received from NDCA."

Since its release, "Sir Rupert and the Battle of the Squirrels" has received an enthusiastic response. Stiegelmeier has toured community book readings across North Dakota and engaged with students in Dickinson public schools. Her readings have not only entertained, but also inspired young minds.

Stiegelmeier says her mission extends beyond her book, as she is currently collaborating with a North Dakota-based illustrator on her next project and has partnered with the Lovin' Literacy Foundation to offer public writing workshops in June.

"I hope people who attend the readings take home the confidence to try writing a story or try illustrating someone else's stories, even if they don't turn out perfectly the first time," she shared. "I really hope that meeting an author who's been through this process gives them the courage to try it for themselves."

The true testament to the book's success lies in the reactions from its young readers, which have been entirely supportive.

"It's okay to make mistakes and it's okay to ask for help," said Joslin Ricker, a Dickinson student, reflecting on the book's message.

"I hope she comes out with some more," added Joey Miller, another Dickinson student, eagerly anticipating future adventures from Stiegelmeier.
