“I have two granddaughters in college,” said Diane von Furstenberg on Thursday afternoon in the living room of her Beverly Hills home, addressing a group of some of the most powerful women in Hollywood who gathered to honor the 2019 female Academy Award nominees, “and let me tell you, they take no shit.” Von Furstenberg, alongside Dawn Hudson, CEO of the Academy, and their cohosts Laura Dern, Ava DuVernay, and Emma Thomas, welcomed the group of nominees and friends, which included Melissa McCarthy, Marina de Tavira, and Diane Warren. Von Furstenberg continued, “They are strong, and they want to be in charge, and this is the message we cannot forget.” Generations collided at the afternoon affair, with Glenn Close and Yalitza Aparicio speaking among friends, and across the room, Dern congratulating nominee Domee Shi. In all, the celebration was the perfect start to the weekend of festivities, but more important, a barometer for female voices and talent being represented in Hollywood, with the number of women nominees growing each year. Hopefully someday soon, the event will outgrow the home of Von Furstenberg in size, but until then, her doors are always open.
