The delightful high-school comedy, created by Mindy Kaling, returns to Netflix this summer.

You only get one senior year—or maybe two, if you’re Trent. Never Have I Ever is coming back for its fourth and final season, following Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) and her friends at Sherman Oaks High School during their 12th-grade year.

While fans are no doubt disappointed to see the end of Devi’s adventures, co-creator Mindy Kaling has said that she felt like ending the show before the characters’ college years was the right choice. “When you launch a show, it’s really hard to figure everybody out. Once you have them, you're like, ‘Forty episodes? That’s it?’” Kaling told E! News in August 2022. “I love the character Devi, I love her family, I love her friends. I love this actress so much. I would do the show until she was a grandma.”

Lang Fisher, who co-created the show with Kaling, agrees that keeping Devi and her friends in the same place for college—as many teen series have done—didn’t make a ton of sense. “I think we felt like this is it, this is good. We can tell this tale and end it the way we want to on a high note and really finish out senior year and it will feel satisfying,” Fisher told Entertainment Weekly in August 2022. “It feels false for everyone to go to college together. Or you have to introduce a whole new crew of characters that nobody cares about. That’s a hard move to make.”

Though the show is coming to an end, Ramakrishnan is happy with its legacy and proud that it offers a beacon of hope for young viewers. “I hope Devi has taught young brown women that it’s OK if they make mistakes, it’s OK to be imperfect, it’s OK to feel a lot of emotions, and it’s OK to feel them very strongly because that only makes you you—and that only makes you more of an icon,” she explained to Teen Vogue in August 2022.

“It’s also OK if you’re not like Devi too, because you don’t have to be," she continued. "You don’t have to be like anything that you’ve seen on TV. And that is fine because you’re you, just as worthy of a TV show, of being a main character.”

What happened at the end of Never Have I Ever Season 3?

When Season 3 of Never Have I Ever wrapped up, Devi had decided to stay in Sherman Oaks to finish high school alongside her friends rather than move to Colorado and attend the prestigious Shrubland School. On the love-life front, Devi complained to Ben (Jaren Lewison) about how she couldn’t keep a boyfriend, and he presented her with a homemade coupon for “one free boink.”

At the seniors’ graduation ceremony, Eleanor (Ramona Young) discovered that Trent (Benjamin Norris) would be repeating senior year, and Paxton (Darren Barnet) thanked Devi for helping him get into college. Devi also learned that Fabiola (Lee Rodriguez) had sex with Addison (Terry Hu), making her the only virgin left in the friend group. The season finale ended with Devi visiting Ben to redeem her “one free boink” pass. As they started kissing, the door closed behind them.

What will happen in Never Have I Ever Season 4?

Kaling, Ramakrishnan, and the rest of the cast and crew haven’t said much about the plot of Season 4, but it’s safe to assume that Devi and her friends will experience many traditional high-school rites of passage. An April 2023 teaser for the season included hints that we’ll see the girls graduate and attend their senior prom.

There will also, of course, be plenty of boy drama. Season 3 ended with Devi cashing in her “one free boink” card with Ben, but it’s not clear whether they actually did the deed. Paxton has graduated, but he’s back in the mix as well along with a new guy named Ethan (Michael Cimino). Judging by the kiss Ethan and Devi share in the teaser, Ben and Paxton will have plenty of competition for everyone’s favorite nerdy harpist.

Does Devi end up with Ben in Never Have I Ever Season 4?

This is the big question that everyone wants answered, but so far, Kaling, Fisher, and Ramakrishnan aren’t telling—so we’ll just have to watch and find out. The Season 3 finale hinted that Devi lost her virginity to Ben, but the scene faded to black before that was confirmed. Ben is also not the only man vying for Devi’s love in the series’ final episodes. Paxton is still around and gazing into Devi’s eyes, and Ethan—the new boy in town—seems ready to put up a fight.

Is Never Have I Ever Season 4 the last season?

The fourth season of Never Have I Ever will be its last. Co-creators Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher have said they didn’t want to force all the characters into the same college or introduce a whole new set after the original friend group went their separate ways.

“I wish we could just do the show until they’re 50,” Kaling joked to Entertainment Weekly in August 2022. “It’s so hard to launch a show, so hard to find talent that’s so good, and the truth is I would follow Devi until her dying day.”

Netflix released a short teaser for season 4 in April 2023 that offered a few hints about what Devi and the gang will get up to in the new episodes. Paxton has graduated, but he makes an appearance too, sharing a flirtatious look with Devi at one point. Paxton has some competition, though, in the form of Ethan, who shares a kiss with Devi and has the kind of abs that cause Devi to exclaim, “Holy s--t.”
