From Town & Country

Last week, Michelle Williams shocked fans with some very unexpected news: she was engaged to—and expecting a baby with—Thomas Kail. Here's what to know about the future Mr. Williams.

He frequently collaborates with Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Kail is most famous for directing Hamilton (and taking home a Tony for it). Before that, he also directed Miranda's In the Heights. Currently, Kail is represented on Broadway with Freestyle Love Supreme, a show he directed, co-created, and co-produced.

His most recent collaboration with Miranda (and several other theater veterans) was on Fosse/Verdon, FX's miniseries about creative legend Bob Fosse and his wife Gwen Verdon. (It wasn't his first time creating TV, though—he won an Emmy for directing Grease: Live! in 2016.)

He directed Williams in Fosse/Verdon.

Details are scarce about when, exactly, Kail and Williams became romantically involved, but they certainly worked closely together on Fosse/Verdon. Kail directed five of the show's eight episodes, as well as developing and writing for the series; Williams starred as Gwen Verdon.

Kail, Williams, and the rest of the cast and crew clearly had creative chemistry: Fosse/Verdon has been nominated for several awards; Williams alone has already taken home an Emmy for her role in the show, and is in the running for a Golden Globe.

Williams's daughter seems to approve of him.

According to People, which first reported that the actress was engaged to Kail, it was Williams's daughter who "played matchmaker" for the couple. (Matilda, 14, is Williams's child with the late Heath Ledger.)
