All the Details Behind Hailey Bieber’s Vera Wang Wedding Reception Dress
“Hailey’s such an it girl!” Vera Wang proclaims. “There’s just something very poetic in the way she moves. There’s this sense of whimsy, and it’s a very personal way of being. It’s so charming.” The iconic wedding dress designer is on the phone to talk about the model’s second dress, a light, minimal charmeuse gown with crisscrossing back straps and a cowl one-shoulder detail that Wang created so that the bride could dance the night away after the ceremony. “As you know, this is so common with young women [now], they like to change and change and change again,” Wang says. Now, it’s not just about the wedding, but the wedding weekend, and the wedding weekend wardrobe. “I could barely drag anybody to my wedding at the Pierre!” the designer jokes. “And now everyone gets married over four days in Bermuda. It’s not uncommon—it’s quite the norm!”
Bieber fully embraced this approach to event dressing at her wedding in South Carolina, working with her stylist Maeve Reilly to curate the perfect assortment of looks. The bride walked down the aisle in an off-the-shoulder lace Off-White dress by Virgil Abloh, before switching into not one but two other dresses, the last of which was Ralph and Russo. “The wedding dress was already done,” Wang explains. “This was [definitely] more of the party dress. They were much more open to something seductive, light, and sensual [for this look]. The wedding dress had a certain formality to it. This was meant to be the complete opposite. I love using the dancer reference with this because when I see her I sort of see a ballerina.” The dress has a very slight mermaid silhouette according to Wang, and even a little bit of a nightgown feel. Bieber’s hair was still pulled up in a bun when she put it on, and she paired the dress with sneakers so she could really party with her friends.
“I did her aunt Chynna’s wedding when she married Billy Baldwin many years ago,” Wang remembers. “That’s how I knew them then...Hailey’s dad [Stephen] came to the fittings, and it was really lovely and nice to catch up. I have a soft spot for the Baldwin family, so to even play a small part in Hailey’s wedding felt like full circle for me and was so lovely.”
