Designers Want Us Wearing Red, Furry Coats Next Season

If there's one wardrobe staple to invest in, according to the Fall 2023 runways, it's this.

Every season, we can expect to see a number of trends and throughlines between collections and fashion weeks. But there was one specific recurring item at the Fall 2023 debuts that was especially hard to miss.

Designers seemed to agree that a red, furry coat is the statement piece everyone will want in their wardrobes come autumn. Christian Cowan and Ferragamo centered their Fall 2023 runways around the muppet-like outerwear, solidifying both the color red and furry fabrics as new essentials.

Designers took a few different approaches to the style: David Koma and MSGM opted for a hairier fabrication that would make Elmo feel a certain kinship to the wearer.

Meanwhile, Alberta Ferretti and Stella McCartney went in a smoother, more teddy-like direction, reminiscent of the inescapable teddy jacket phenomenon of 2017. (See: the great Emma Chamberlain influence.)
