This Designer Just Sold a Collection of Virtual Furniture at Auction for $450,000
When I think of furniture, I think of concrete, moveable pieces that I can arrange and enjoy in my home. For example: couches I can plop my bum on, dining room tables I can eat my food on, and beds I can catch some Zzzs in. However, as I recently learned, not all furniture is actually tangible.
Over the weekend, Barcelona-based designer Andrés Reisinger sold ten pieces of virtual furniture in an online auction with Nifty Gateway, according to Dezeen. From these sales, the innovator took home over $450,000 — with his most expensive (nonexistent) item priced at $67,777. All 10 items were sold in less than 10 minutes.
These furnishings were all apart of Reisinger's The Shipping collection. The collection, which contains a medley of pink, purple, orange, and silver renderings that resembled the furniture we know today, but with a futuristic twist. Individual piece names included: "Complicated Sofa," "Complicated Drawer," 'Time Table," and more. You can view the collection here.
Those who bought these pieces will be able to view and move them around in any shared 3D virtual space or "metaverse," including popular gaming worlds like Minecraft, Decentraland, and Somnium Space. While the collection is completely digital, the auction page notes that five furnishings will include physical counterparts.
Reisinger has spent almost a decade working with Apple, Microsoft, and Samsung to challenge the boundaries of diverse media.
