When designer Jennifer Hunter and her team moved into their first official New York office just before the pandemic, it had a cold, industrial look. With a few cosmetic updates, Hunter turned the bland space into a tiny jewel box of an office that resembles a cozy country retreat.

“It has always been a dream of mine to have a country home, so I thought why not make my teeny, tiny office a country retreat,” Hunter tells House Beautiful. “Especially during quarantine, this felt like a grand idea!”

Since the office marks a monumental move for her boutique interior design firm, Hunter wanted to incorporate and support all of the brands and vendors that have been instrumental in making her projects sing. The once-bare, white walls are now painted in Clare’s Nairobi Blue and feature decor—including a message board from Ballard Designs—ideal for showcasing samples and floor plans. In place of the basic chair-and-desk combo, white double-drawer desks with brass accents from Ballard Designs were paired with Serena & Lily rattan armchairs; Hunter upholstered cushions for the seats in a floral Lee Jofa fabric with an indigo trim from Samuel & Sons. The console and rattan tray behind the desk provide extra storage, and a rattan mirror from Serena & Lily adds a touch of lively warmth.

Hunter’s favorite piece in the office? The vintage Turkish runner by Milagro Collective. “The color palette spurred the entire design,” she says. Other elements that play into the soothing palette of blues, greens, and tans are the lamps—all of which are from Circa Lighting and are embellished with custom lampshades from Cruel Mountain using fabrics by Schuyler Samperton Textiles. The vintage bamboo hook from Ellan's Relics on Etsy and rustic topiary pots from Terrain help pull it all together.

With its cheerful color scheme and textural nuance, the space is a true reflection of Hunter’s aesthetic. “It represents my approach to every project: traditional but seen through a fresh lens, and equal parts tailored and eclectic, glamorous and relaxed, bold and subtle,” the designer says. It also feels like a breath of fresh air deep in the heart of the city.
