This Designer-Approved Urban Outfitters Sofa Is Selling Out Quickly
Finding seating for small rooms is the ultimate shopper’s paradox: You want something sizable enough to comfortably fit roommates and guests, yet won’t hog precious square footage. You’re also somewhat limited when it comes to stylish and contemporary yet compact silhouettes, but Urban Outfitters has set out to change that. The brand currently carries a small-space-friendly sofa that’s unique-looking, comfortable, and designer-approved (times two!).
As part of Apartment Therapy’s Small/Cool 2023 pop-up experience last month, our team challenged 18 industry pros to bring some of the top interior trends to life in their own shoppable IRL rooms. Within these spaces, two designers — Dala Al-Fuwaires and Hollie Velten-Lattrell — both used Urban Outfitters’ popular Roma Sofa. They styled it in completely different ways, though, so you can pull plenty of inspiration for your own home.
The low-profile Roma two-seater comes in olive or ivory linen-look upholstery, both with ultra-deep cushions and matching throw pillows. Proof that petite sofas and loveseats can still look fun, a cool wavy trim along the bottom also sets this modern style apart from the rest. It clocks in at just 74.8 inches long for the perfect functional focal point in any modest living rooms or guest bedrooms (hello, new daybed replacement).
That’s evident in Al-Fuwaires’ creative, fashion-inspired Small/Cool music room, shown below, where she positioned the green Roma Sofa into a mini conversation vignette facing two leather armchairs (not pictured). Playing up the organic shape of this furniture piece, she also surrounded it with sculptural accents like a round pillow, vases displayed on curved shelves, and even arched wallpaper panels cut from Spoonflower’s Topography Grid design. In fact, the sofa’s low-slung frame leverages more blank wall space to hang large pieces of art, tapestries, or full-scale wallcoverings.
Velten-Lattrell, on the other hand, used the ivory Roma Sofa as the foundation for a patterned upholstered furniture skirt in her vintage-inspired Small/Cool design. Although this bespoke cover conceals the couch’s playful wave border, it’s an easily removable — and personalizable — touch that gives this seating a custom feel. The ethereal style’s made possible by the armless sofa frame, allowing for hassle-free draping with any floor-length fabric of your choice. Take another cue from Velten-Lattrell and top off this DIY with a matching bolster pillow, too.
No matter how you decorate (or layer over) it, the Roma Sofa adds artistic appeal to your space. It’s a definite splurge at $1,299, but both designers’ Small/Cool curations speak volumes to its versatility. And they’re not the only ones loving this style, either — the olive iteration is almost out of stock from Urban Outfitters.
