A Design Pro Shares How To Decorate on a Dime With Press-On Wallpaper

Beige walls are a great blank canvas for decor, but they can easily become boring. Want to put a pop of color on your walls without the time or financial commitment involved in painting or wallpapering? To the rescue: press-on wallpaper. It’s never been easier (or more affordable!) to add a splash of stylish pattern to any corner of your home. We talked to a design pro for advice on picking the best press-on wallpaper patterns for your home.

For a Dining Area: Speckled

“Press-on wallpaper is amazing,” says design pro Jeannine Rose of SweetHumbleHome.com. “It’s a really simple and affordable way to update an entire room without the commitment of wallpaper!” She suggests limiting bold-patterned wallpaper to one accent wall so it doesn’t overwhelm your space. Here, a speckled print, called terrazzo, brings cheery energy to a dining area. “This classic print was originally popular in the 1950s and now it’s everywhere again — it’s so bright and brings textural flair to a neutral dining area.” Try this adorable Orange Terrazzo Peel & Stick Wallpaper (Buy from Overstock, $32.84 for 31 feet).

For an Office: Damask

Whether it’s for your home office or craft room, adding a damask-style pattern to a blank wall instantly elevates a workspace! “It’s important for our creative spaces to feel airy and welcoming, and choosing a wallpaper with softer lines, like this damask print, offers a hint of feminine sophistication,” says Rose. For an eye-catching touch, hang a trio of shadow box shelves on the wall to stow extra supplies while also giving the illusion of framed art. Tip: Pick up a little bit more wallpaper than needed for your space to account for any tricky areas or redos. We love this elegant Damsel Removable Peel and Stick Wallpaper in the color "Bisque" (Buy from Overstock, $35.99 for 28 feet).

For a Living Area: Geometric

“Choosing a wallpaper pattern with sharp lines, like the fun geometric print shown above, lends movement and visual interest to any room,” says Rose. “This is a nice choice for a living space because the pattern’s sharp angles are balanced out with the plush solid-textured seating, and the paper’s brassy sheen plays off the other metallic accents, offering a modern yet inviting vibe.” Check out this fun and classy Gold Diamond Geometric Peel and Stick Removable Wallpaper by NextWall (Buy from Overstock, $33.29 for 30 feet).

How To Apply Press-On Wallpaper

Start by measuring the wall and gathering the amount of paper needed. Next, peel the backing from the paper and press it on the wall, moving from top to bottom, smoothing and cutting as needed. Tip: Steer clear of air bubbles by running downward strokes on the papered wall with a plastic smoothing tool (from the hardware store). For a variety of pretty paper, starting at $19, search “peel-and-stick wallpaper” at Overstock.com.
