The Design Museum's "Rebel: 30 Years of London Fashion" Celebrates 300 Young Designers
The Design Museum presents "REBEL: 30 Years of London Fashion," an exhibition sponsored by Alexander McQueen that celebrates the influential impact of over 300 young designers from the NEWGEN alumni on the global fashion scene.
Scheduled to open in September during London Fashion Week, the exhibition provides a comprehensive exploration of British fashion culture. It delves into the opportunities available to young creatives in London's vibrant fashion scene, featuring nearly 100 innovative looks from debut collections. Working closely with the designers, the Design Museum carefully selected groundbreaking pieces from their archives.
As a tribute to the 30th anniversary of the BFC's NEWGEN program, which nurtures emerging talent, the exhibition is guest-curated by Sarah Mower MBE and co-curated by Rebecca Lewin. It presents an array of films, drawings and memorabilia from esteemed UK-based designers. Among the highlights is Marjan Pejoski's iconic swan dress, famously worn by Björk, making its first appearance in Britain since its debut 22 years ago. Additionally, visitors will have the chance to see a replica of Sam Smith's attention-grabbing latex suit by HARRI and Steven Stokey Daley's original floral Oxford Bags trousers, as worn by Harry Styles.
The exhibition is thoughtfully organized into various sections, each representing London's creative catalysts. The "Art School" section shines a light on how art education establishments in London have fostered individuality, while "Backstage Pass" offers visitors a coveted VIP experience by delving into the pre-show moments of a catwalk presentation. The "Runway" section immerses viewers in six influential fashion presentations by Christopher Kane, Craig Green, JW Anderson, Meadham Kirchhoff, Wales Bonner and Sinéad O'Dwyer.
